Ares (HD)
Rarity Base Stats Price Obtained From
Gold 1,200/900 N/A Achieving Top 5% in Online Battle Seasons, Nth Metal Ultimate Pack, Character Bundle Battle Of Themyscira
Passive To the Death: When Ares performs the God Smack special, it shocks opponents causing them to LOSE the ability to BLOCK for a limited time.

Ares is the first Online Battle season rewards character. He cannot be unlocked, and can only be obtained in limited quantities by ranking high in his online season(s). Eliting him thus takes a long time and cannot be done with Power Credits. With Ares dealing high amounts of damage and having a deadly passive, it's no wonder he's been held back for the longest time and is highly sought after in multiplayer seasons.

Heavy 4% - 4% - 4% 12%

Passive

Ares block disable

Harley Quinn has a red aura surrounding her, indicating that she is unable to BLOCK for a limited time.

Ares Prime is a character with decently high base damage and a deadly special 2, God Smack, that shocks his target for 10 seconds, thus making the whole enemy team lose their ability to block. If God Smack disables blocking, other opponents will also be unable to block, even if the previous opponent is knocked out subsequent to (but not directly by) the use of God Smack, or if they tag in by themselves. If God Smack itself deals the knockout blow, or triggers the rescues from passives of Batgirl/Arkham Knight or Catwoman/Batman Ninja, the block disable will not be activated. If God Smack misses (e.g. because the opponent is too far away), block disable is still applied, but not if it is actively blinked or evaded with passives or gear. Superman/Injustice 2's passive will also prevent block disable effect.

Invulnerability will prevent the block disabled from being applied (including if God Smack itself triggered invulnerability), but it won't cleanse a block disable applied prior to invulnerability being triggered. However, the block disable is applied very slightly after God Smack's damage is dealt, so if God Smack hits at the very end of invulnerability, it is possible to do no damage, yet apply block disable.

Ares is one of the most reliable damage dealers with his 1-hit unblockable SP2, since many other powerhouses in the game have multi-hit specials, which can be countered by various characters and gears, such as Raven/Prime, Shazam/New 52, and especially Astro-Harness - one of the most common and annoying gears in Online Battle. Ares can simply bypass them with his 1-hit SP2, shut down the potential threats.

Ares' SP1 has an extremely slow animation, making it easy to block and further encouraging the use of his very powerful SP2, which can be made even deadlier with gears that boost his SP2 damage as well as his signature gear which synergizes well with his high base damage. With the introduction of the Tantu Totem, Ares has become an even more dangerous foe than ever, as tagging in would give him a bar of power which aids him in reaching his Special 2 a lot more often as well as being able to use it again in rapid succession if it is able to knock out an opponent or if the opponent took no damage.

Tantu Totem can be used to apply the block disable without expending power; if Ares knocks down the opponent with a heavy combo and then immediately use God Smack, it will do no damage, refunding power, but still applying the block disable.

Gear

As stated above, Tantu Totem is the best gear possible for Ares. Combining with The Master's Death Cart will almost always give him 2 bars of power on tag-in, instantly nuke the enemy with his powerful SP2, as well as inflicting some Area Effect damage. Other SP2 gears are also recommended, such as Heart of Darkness or Fourth World Godly Mace. His signature gear Blade of The War God is also a good choice for Ares, giving 20% Area Effect on SP2 (even higher than legendary gears) and high boosts to his basic combos. Demon Blade is also a decent choice as it gives a 15% damage boost to his SP2. If Demon Blade is paired with Tantu Totem and Ares has a a crit chance of at least 40%, Ares' SP2 is guaranteed to crit if landed unblocked.

Because Ares is a fragile character due to his low health, Astro-Harness is crucial to ensure his survival in harder fights in Online Battle, where opponents are supplied with several power boost gears or crit augments. A common setup for him consists of Astro-Harness, Tantu Totem and The Master's Death Cart, providing both nuking power for his SP2 and extra Invulnerability which could be a life-saver. The Master's Death Cart's tag-in shots will inherit the unblockable trait of his SP2 if it is executed when the Cart is firing, breaking block and allow his SP2 to crit (since block breaker can't crit, if the enemy is blocking, his SP2 will become a block breaker, deal full damage but can't crit).

Interactions

Please note that battles are highly situational: this section only mentions cards that have mechanics that, for any reason, are particularly effective with/against, or particularly ineffective against Ares. Having a card that "counters" Ares does not mean it is always a good choice.

Good Against

Countered By

  • Resurrect effects: Effective in surviving single-hit high-burst damage. However, Ares' passive will still apply and render them unable to block.
  • Harley Quinn: While not immediately apparent, Harley's special 2 runs in real time, allowing her to stall for several seconds while the block disable ticks down.
  • Mother Box: Characters equipped with it have a chance to avoid Ares' infamous special 2. If he is the starting character and geared with Ra's Al Ghul's Scimitar and/or teamed with Batgirl/Prime (this gear/teammate combination being the only one that allows him to unleash a God Smack at the start of a match and also being very popular), then the gear will also drain his power if equipped on any character on the opposing team.
  • Batman/Dawn of Justice, The Flash/Reverse Flash, Superman/Injustice 2, The Flash/Wally West Rebirth: All four have a chance of avoiding both God Smack and his passive, although Reverse Flash can mitigate the damage from the special, but not Ares' passive.
  • Superman/Blackest Night: Superman's passive protects himself and his Blackest Night teammates from Ares's Unblockable Special 2, also negating the block-disable effect.
  • Power Drain characters, such as Nightwing and Lex Luthor.
  • Killer Frost/Prime and Solomon Grundy/Earth 2: Their power dampening makes it harder for Ares to use his powerful SP2. Grundy's gear decay on tag-in can also possibly shatter Ares' signature gear, Blade of The War God, which additionally deals Area Effect damage from his SP2.
  • Catwoman/Batman Ninja: Her massive power drain on basic attacks will prevent Ares from using his SP2. And in the event that he does use his SP2, Catwoman's KO evasion gives her a second chance at life because her Batman Ninja teammates will rescue her once per match.
  • Batgirl/Arkham Knight: If paired with Arkham allies, she can rescue them once per match and stun Ares, leaving him vulnerable for a counterattack.

Abilities

Here are Ares's abilities.

Ability Classification Description Usage

God Smack Second Special Ares smashes the ground with a powerful strike. UNBLOCKABLE. Rapid Tap (5%)
Annihilator Super Move Ares summons an ancient undead army and brings down the full force of his powers as the God of War. UNBLOCKABLE. Tap

The Master's Death Cart's tag-in shots will inherit the unblockable trait of his SP2 if it is executed when the Cart is firing, breaking block and allowing his SP2 to crit (since a block breaker can't crit, if the enemy is blocking, his SP2 will become a block breaker, dealing full damage but can't crit).

Trivia

  • Previously, if God Smack knocks out an opponent, the block disable will be passed on the next opponent that tags in, but this functionality has been removed by the 2.6 update and now it will not affect the next opponent.
  • As of the 2.7 update, his passive has been somewhat restored; if God Smack KOs the opponent, the block disable will not transfer to the next opponent. If it does not KO, however, all opponents will be incapable of blocking for the normal 10 seconds; even if the affected character tags out, the next character will still be unable to block until it wears off.
  • Ares is the last character to have a 1-hit SP2 (without counting Harley Quinn/Arkham Knight and Harley Quinn/Suicide Squad due to the unique nature of their SP2).
  • If the opponent is able to survive his Super Move, the arrows from the animation would still be stuck into the opponent for a couple more seconds afterwards.
